Variety: Kurume

Kurume is a renowned regional landrace variety originating from Yirgacheffe.

Background

  • Historically, Ethiopian farmers selected seeds locally rather than through formal breeding programs.

  • After a severe coffee berry disease outbreak in the 1960s, the Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC) began cataloging and selecting resistant varieties.

  • Researchers eventually focused on local landrace varieties naturally adapted to their environments and reflective of each region’s distinct cup profile.

Kurume Characteristics

  • Small coffee cherries

  • Consistently high yields

  • Flavor profiles iconic to the Yirgacheffe and Gedeo regions

  • Commonly grown throughout Guji and Gedeo, including Yirgacheffe

  • Sometimes confused with JARC varieties due to similar appearance

Kurume takes its name from indigenous trees in the region, mirroring the plant’s small fruit size and abundant annual harvests.
